The Origin of Hot Yoga

Hot Yoga as we know it today has roots in the teachings of Bishnu Ghosh, a pioneer in therapeutic yoga from Kolkata, India. His lineage focused on strength, discipline and measurable physical results.

One of his students, Bikram Choudhury, later popularised a fixed 26-posture sequence practised in a heated room, designed to systematically work every part of the body. The heat wasn’t about intensity for intensity’s sake; it was about preparing the body to move safely and deeply, increasing circulation and supporting detoxification.

Over time, modern interpretations have evolved from this, including our very own Hot Yoga Signature here at Yoga Collective. Rooted in tradition, yet intelligently adapted for modern bodies and busy minds.

Why Practise in the Heat?

Hot Yoga is more than just 'yoga in a hot room.' When practised correctly, it becomes a powerful, structured and transformative experience.

🔥 Physical Benefits

  • Increases flexibility safely as muscles warm more efficiently

  • Improves circulation and cardiovascular endurance

  • Builds strength through repetition and intelligent sequencing

  • Supports joint mobility and spinal health

  • Encourages detoxification through sweat

🧠 Mental & Emotional Benefits

  • Develops resilience and mental grit

  • Enhances focus and discipline

  • Reduces stress through breath control

  • Builds confidence...you realise you’re capable of more than you think

There is something uniquely empowering about staying present when the room gets hot and your mind wants to quit. That is where the real growth happens!

Who Should Try Hot Yoga?

If you:

  • Sit at a desk all day and feel stiff

  • Train hard (runners, gym-goers, cyclists) and need structured mobility

  • Want a practice that challenges you physically and mentally

  • Thrive on routine and measurable progress

  • Love the feeling of walking out of a class thinking, “Wow. I did that!”

Is our Hot Yoga Signature Class Suitable for Beginners?

"Yes!"

At Yoga Collective, we don’t believe in “levels.”we believe in high-quality teaching that meets you where you are today.

Our Hot Yoga Signature class is structured, repetitive and clearly guided, with modifications and advancements always offered. The repetition helps you learn the sequence quickly, build body confidence and you start to see the progress. The sequence stays the same, but your experience changes each time you practice. Our Hot Yoga Signature class teaches you to tune into how your body feels today and not to judge, but to be kind to yourself.

You do not need to be flexible. You don’t need to be able to touch your toes. You simply need to show up.
